Container ship blocks Suez Canal passage
As you may already know, passage through the Suez Canal is currently closed to ships in both directions. A container ship operated by Evergreen Marine was forced off course by high winds and a sandstorm early Tuesday, March 23.
The Panama-registered Ever Given, operated by shipping company Evergreen, was bound for the Dutch port of Rotterdam from China and headed north through the Channel en route to the Mediterranean.
Unfortunately, the operation attempt to refloat the ship during the night has failed. Two dredgers will continue dredging throughout the night. At this time (0015 hours local time in Suez, Egypt) the towing service has been suspended for the remainder of the night and will resume between 08:00 and 09:00 hours local time.
The incident continues to cause long traffic jams on the waterway, preventing vessels from passing and causing delays.
